The chief executives of Apple and Samsung have agreed to attend a mediation session next month, where they will go over the details of their patent disputes ahead of a court hearing in March.
Apple’s Tim Cook and Samsung’s Oh-Hyun Kwon will attend the private mediation with in-house lawyers by or before February 19, according to a joint court filing. The two companies' legal teams have already met to "discuss settlement opportunities".
Apple and Samsung have been embroiled in a series of ongoing lawsuits regarding the design of smartphones and tablet computers since 2011.
It began when Apple claimed that several of Samsung's Android phones and tablets – including the Nexus S, Epic 4G, Galaxy S 4G, and the Samsung Galaxy Tab – infringed on its trademarks, user interface and style. Samsung then counter-sued, alleging Apple had infringed Samsung's patents for mobile-communications technologies.
By July 2012, the two companies were involved in more than 50 lawsuits around the globe, with billions of dollars in damages claimed between them.
Apple has won a ruling in its favour in the United States, while Samsung has won rulings in South Korea, Japan, and the UK. Last year Samsung won a limited ban from the US International Trade Commission on sales of certain Apple products, but the ban was later vetoed.
The two companies will meet again in March, in a United States court, over Apple's claims that Samsung infringed its patents.
