Is Xiaomi Secretly Sending Smartphone User Data to Chinese Servers?

xiaomi_redmi_note_multiple.jpg

Chinese handset makers in the past have been accused of stealing smartphone user information in numerous instances. Recently, a German security firm even claimed that a Chinese smartphone brand's smartphones came preinstalled with spying software.
The latest in the series of claims against Chinese smartphone manufacturers is the allegation that the popular brand, Xiaomi - which recently marked a successful entry into the Indian market this month, was stealing user information stored in the Redmi Note smartphone.
OCWorkbench, citing a Taiwanese publication, suggested that the budget Xiaomi Redmi Note, which was announced for the Indian market alongside the Mi 3 (Review | Pictures), was secretly sending data to a China-based server.
In addition, [the OCWorkbench report notes] a Hong Kong-based IMA Mobile user Kenny Li claims to have tested the Redmi Note smartphone, and found it was automatically connecting to an IP address hosted in China and sending data back when connected to a Wi-Fi network. Li also claimed that the Xiaomi Redmi Note was sending information to the Chinese server at a much lower data transmission rate when connected to a 3G network.
Interestingly, the Redmi Note was reportedly found transmitting data in the background even after being rooted or after being flashed with another firmware on top. OCWorkbenchspeculates that the transmission process had been hardcoded into the Xiaomi Redmi Note. The site noted that the company's cloud service called MiCloud was switched off during the testing.
According to the OCWorkbench report, the data transmitted to the China server included photos in media storage, and text messages. OCWorkbench notes that this could be an 'automatic' backup of the user data on the Xiaomi smartphone; although this was done without an explicit permission from the device user.
We are yet to hear an official comment from Xiaomi responding to the allegations that the Redmi Note secretly sends user data to a China-based server.

Android 4.4.4 KitKat Update for Sony Xperia Z1, Xperia Z Ultra, Z1 Compact and Xperia T2 Ultra: Bug Fixes

Sony Xperia Z1

Users of Sony's flagship smartphones, including Sony Xperia Z1, Xperia Z Ultra, Xperia T2 Ultra and Xperia Z1 can now avail the official Android 4.4.4 KitKat update. According to information on Sony's Mobile Support pages, the latest firmware from Google offers many special features, counting camera updates, App to SD card transfer, plus the most recent apps editions.

Google, by default, did away with the "App to SD Card" transfer feature from the Android KitKat OS, which was incorporated in the earlier Android versions like 2.3 Gingerbread, 4.1 to 4.3 Jelly Bean and 4.0 Ice Cream Sandwich.
However, XperiaBlog recently observed that Sony Xperia T2 Ultra and Sony T2 Ultra Dual rolled out by the company, which received the latest firmware update, regained the "App to SD Card" feature enabling the movement of specific applications to the external storage facility.
This feature can be accessible by going to Settings>Applications. Sony Mobile has also included a latest column in the Applications Manager and labelled "On SD Card" showing that now users are able to move apps. Thus, move space will now be available on these two devices' internal storage by transferring selected apps to the SD card.
This feature, however, is not present in the Android 4.4.2 KitKat firmware update for Sony Xperia Z series. While the reason for its non-inclusion is unknown, it may result in limited internal storage in Sony's low-level and mid-range smartphones.
Camera Enhancements
Sony has also upgraded the performance of the camera of Xperia Z1, Xperia Z Ultra and Xperia Z1 Compact running on Android 4.4.4 KitKat. The official support page of Sony confirms that these devices received latest camera updates enhancing the experience of the users. However, the precise improvements were not divulged by the company.
Nearly all Xperia smartphones that received the Android 4.3 and Android 4.4 updates are now using Smart Social Camera app enabling downloadable camera add-ons like Info-Eye, Augmented Reality, Motiongraphy and Timeshift Burst. They also have faster loading times, enhanced low-light scene detection, better image capturing and other improvements.
Other Enhancements
In addition, Sony Mobile incorporated many additional changes on the Android 4.4.4 KitKat pertaining to the apps' performance and services as well as the essential bug fixes. Now the users can avail the latest security updates of Android KitKat 4.4.4: improved Google Voice, Google+, Contacts app and music streaming; in addition to the latest versions of Sony indigenous apps.
The new bug fixes alott a more stable system, longer battery life, and a patch for OpenSSL vulnerability on Android 4.4.3 KitKat pertaining to Heartbleed bug and better user experience.

Flir One case turns Apple's iPhone into a high-end thermal imaging camera

Thermal imaging company Flir has announced that pre-orders for its new One iPhone case — which will let outdoorsmen, HVAC contractors, and people who simply like to see how hot things are convert their iPhone 5 or 5s into a thermal camera — will begin Wednesday, with the device coming to Apple retail stores in August.

The Flir One will offer users the ability to view live infrared imagery when paired with a companion app, and the company imagines a variety of uses for the accessory, ranging from home improvement to security. Flir hopes the One's relatively modest $349.99 price tag — a significant discount from the company's other cameras, which can run into the tens of thousands of dollars — will inspire even more creative applications.

"Based on technology that was formerly reserved for the military, Flir One is the first in a new generation of affordable thermal imaging devices designed to inspire imaginative and innovative uses by consumers," Flir Chief Executive Andy Teich said in a release. "This represents a revolutionary step forward for both Flir Systems and thermal imaging."

Homeowners could use the Flir One to find and fix air leaks to make their home more energy efficient without needing to hire outside contractors, for instance, or campers could use the camera to observe nocturnal creatures. The Flir app also allows for the creation of time-lapse and panoramic thermal images.

Flir will begin accepting pre-orders in the U.S. on July 23 at 9 a.m. Eastern Time at flir.com//flirone. The camera will make its way to Europe as well as Apple retail outlets in the U.S. and Canada in August.

Cool Samsung video shows how the Galaxy S5 can take you places the iPhone can’t go

iPhone 5s Vs. Galaxy S5 Battery Life

Samsung seems to think its new ads that either mock the iPhone’s poor battery life or that tout its own phones’ strong batteries are winners. The company on Friday put out a new video chronicling two men who took the Galaxy S5 with them on a road trip across the United States and didn’t have to recharge it once.
“We put the Galaxy S 5 with Ultra Power Saving Mode to the ultimate challenge — a coast to coast road trip without recharging,” Samsung explains. “The results: 3504 miles driven, 7 days on the road, 150 hours traveled, 86 texts sent, 119 photos taken, 4+ minutes of video, 16+ minutes of talk time, 13 states visited.”
While Samsung obviously optimized the device’s usage throughout the road trip to ensure that it lasted the whole time without a charge, it’s also true that multiple studies have found that Samsung phones’ batteries offer significantly more juice than the iPhone 5s.
Be sure to check out Samsung’s full video below.

As of now, the changelog for the Xperia T2 Ultra and Xperia T2 Ultra Dual with Android 4.4 KitKat update mentions a few performance tweaks as well as enhanced compatibility with wearable devices like the SmartBand SWR10 .

Sony had launched the Xperia T2 Ultra and Xperia T2 Ultra Dual with Android 4.3 Jelly Bean in January this year, along with the Xperia E1.

Microsoft expands 4G WP lineup in Taiwan with Lumia 930

Microsoft launched its 4G-enabled Lumia 930 smartphone in Taiwan Thursday, marking the second Windows phone released in Taiwan since the software giant acquired Nokia's handset division.
The Lumia 930 will be available from Chunghwa Telecom Company, Taiwan's largest mobile service provider, on July 16 with a price tag of NT$18,900 (US$630) for a contract-free model. The 5-inch device runs Windows Phone 8.1 and sports a 20-megapixel PureView camera with a lens by German optical systems maker Carl Zeiss AG.
Microsoft launched the mid-range Lumia 635 in June with Chunghwa Telecom and plans to make more Lumia series phones compatible with the country's new 4G LTE network through software upgrades, said Jacob Chen, general manager of Taiwan sales and marketing at Microsoft Devices Group.
Gary Chan, the group's head of pan-Asia marketing, said Windows Phone volume in the Asia-Pacific region excluding Japan grew 105% last year thanks to strong support from operators, retailers and developers.
The Lumia brand name, however, will no longer be used for Windows-based smartphones in the future as Microsoft plans to announce a new brand name by the end of this year, Chan added.
Nokia's feature phones will continue to feature the iconic name of the Finnish phone maker as guaranteed by a 10-year licensing deal with its parent company, he said.
In April this year, Microsoft announced it had completed its acquisition of the Nokia Devices and Services business after approval was granted by Nokia shareholders and governmental regulatory agencies around the world.
With the Nokia mobile phone business, Microsoft said it will target the affordable mobile devices market–a US$50 billion annual opportunity–delivering the first mobile experience to 1 billion people while introducing Microsoft services to new customers worldwide.

iOS 8 vs iOS 7: 8 Changes iPhone Owners Need to Know

iOS 8 vs iOS 7 design looks very much the same.

Apple plans an iOS 8 release this fall as a free update to recent iPhones, leaving many owners wondering how iOS 8 compares to iOS 7. In this short iOS 8 vs iOS 7 comparison iPhone owners can learn what to expect this fall, and several key differences between the two versions.
One thing you will notice immediately in any iOS 8 vs iOS 7 comparison is that the new update doesn’t look much different from iOS 7. After a major change with iOS 7 and further tweaks with iOS 7.1, Apple is focusing on adding major iOS 8 features instead of changing the look again.
When the iOS 8 release date arrives this fall users with an iPhone 4S or newer can update to this new version of the iPhone software. Apple did not reveal the exact date, but should share more details at an iPhone 6 launch event this fall. It is possible that Apple plans the iOS 8 release date for September 17th, two days before the rumorediPhone 6 release date.
Apple released the iOS 7 with a completely new look for the iPhone in September 2013, days before the iPhone 5s. Nine months later it is running on almost 90% of iOS devices in one form or another. This software is now up to iOS 7.1.2, which includes a variety of bug fixes and performance updates to keep iPhone users happy.
New updates are exciting for many users, but there are also some users that worry what will happen to battery life, app compatibility and app crashes on iOS 8. Apple is in the middle of an iOS 8 beta that should help the company find and remove many bugs, delivering a better product to the regular user this fall. Developers also use this time to test apps and update them for iOS 8, to take advantage of new features.

Microsoft and Nokia tipped to launch an Android-powered Lumia smartphone

Nokia XL Android smartphone

MICROSOFT AND NOKIA reportedly will launch an Android-powered Lumia smartphone, following the launch of Nokia's X range earlier this year.
Given the tipster's impressive track record of accurate leaks, especially related to Nokia smartphones, we're inclined to believe this rumour.
Evleaks has revealed nothing more about the mooted Nokia by Microsoft Android device, perhaps beyond confirming the branding that the firms likely will use on future devices.
However, However, with Nokia's Android-powered X smartphones filling a gap in the low-end smartphone market, it's likely that the firms are gearing up to launch a high specification Android device. Online murmurs are claiming that the yet unnamed device will continue the familar, colourful design of Nokia's Lumia smartphones, and likely will feature the Pureview camera technology found on the firm's present Windows Phone devices.
What is perhaps less clear is why the firms are plotting to launch an Android smartphone, given Microsoft's push of its homegrown Windows Phone software. However, like with Nokia's X smartphones, it's possible that the firm is looking to leverage its own apps and services, such as Onedrive and Xbox, by taking advantage of Google's Android mobile operating system.
This likely isn't all Microsoft and Nokia have got up their respective sleeves, as Windows Blog Italia revealed over the weekend that the firms are also gearing up to launch the so-called Lumia 830.
This device also comes with "Nokia by Microsoft" branding on its rear, and features a circular camera component similar to the Nokia Lumia 1020, although this apparently will feature a lesser 13MP sensor.
It's not presently clear when Microsoft and Nokia's mooted Android device, nor the Lumia 830, are likely to make their official debuts, and both firms have yet to comment on the speculation. µ

LG’s rolling out Android KitKat updates to Optimus G Pro and Optimus G smartphones

LG’s rolling out Android KitKat updates to Optimus G Pro and Optimus G smartphones

It’s been a while since LG  dropped the ‘Optimus’ moniker from its range of devices, but now the company has decided to bring some Android KitKat love for its users. Its older devices namely, Optimus G and Optimus G Pro, are all set to receive Android 4.4 KitKat updates, confirmed LG Brazil.

According to the company, the Android KitKat update will be released for Optimus G Pro by the end of this month and for Optimus G by the end of August. A report by AndroidOS also confirms that LG Optimus G Pro E988 has begun receiving 4.4.2 KitKat update in India. Besides, LG has also rolled out the update in other Asian countries like Indonesia, adds the report.

The OTA update can be accessed via  Settings > About phone > Software update. The 684MB file will ensure that Optimus users can access all the KitKat features. The Optimus G that was launched alongside Nexus 4 was the company’s bestselling devices and had quickly crossed the one million sales mark. Some of its key features include 4.7-inch display, 13MP camera, 3G, Wi-Fi and GPS capabilities.

In the past couple of months, LG has been busy pushing KitKat updates for its devices. In May, the company had announced KitKat update for the Optimus L9 2 and G Pro Lite.

Android Devices Are Leaking Location Data Over Wi-Fi: EFF Report

android_wifi_leak.png

A new Electronic Frontier Foundation - a donor-supported membership organisation that claims to defend your rights in this digital world - report states that Android phones and tablets running Android 3.1 (Honeycomb) or later, when connected to Wi-Fi on Preferred Network Offload (PNO) mode, transmit their recent Wi-Fi network information to other devices on the network.
In PNO mode, a device can access Wi-Fi networks even when the display is off. The EFF says that anyone who wants to track the location of these Android 3.1 or higher devices can find it by checking the real language names of the Wi-Fi. For example, if someone was to access the Wi-Fi network at a Starbucks, and if the establishment's Wi-Fi name was 'Starbucks', then in that case miscreants would be able to find that information. In fact, if someone has been travelling and accessing Wi-Fi connections at multiple locations then the entire travel itinerary would be available, which is not something most people would like. Essentially, it gives easy access to stalkers.
Google responded to the EFF report with a brief statement.
We take the security of our users' location data very seriously and we're always happy to be made aware of potential issues ahead of time. Since changes to this behavior would potentially affect user connectivity to hidden access points, we are still investigating what changes are appropriate for a future release.
In order to prevent the Wi-Fi network information leaks from occurring, EFF also suggests workarounds. It states that one needs to go into the Android phone's Advanced Wi-Fi settings and set the Keep Wi-Fi on during sleep option to Never. The Next Web observes that this might increase the data and power consumption of these devices because the PNO mode actually helps to extend battery life by giving Wi-Fi priority over cellular data, as the Wi-Fi connection uses less power than a cellular connection.

Why Windows Phone isn’t going away anytime soon

Windows Phone Market Share Analysis

No sane person would argue that Windows Phone is a powerhouse in the mobile world, because it’s clearly not. However, I think that BGR contributor Tero Kuittinen takes things too far when he says that Windows Phone’s failure to gain traction in the United States, China and other key markets means that we’re seeing the “death knell” of Microsoft’s mobile platform. There are a lot of reasons for this, but the biggest one is that Microsoft simply can’t afford to ditch Windows Phone unless it wants to get out of the software platform business all together.
When Microsoft outlined its grand vision for the future during its Build conference earlier this year, one of the most important projects it unveiled was a new development platform whose aim is to make it incredibly easy to develop apps across multiple platforms, including PCs, smartphones, tablets, wearable computers and even the Xbox One. We’ve also read reports that Microsoft’s Windows 9 will essentially be one platform that adapts itself across multiple device types so that it serves as a desktop interface on laptops and as a mobile interface on smartphones.
Rightly or wrongly, Microsoft is investing considerable resources integrating Windows Phone with traditional Windows so that the two platforms eventually become interchangeable. You may question this course of action but it’s what Microsoft is doing and I can’t see it dropping all this work just because Windows Phone’s market share dipped in key markets.
Things would be different if we were talking about, say, Palm or BlackBerry whose major business has been selling mobile phones. But Microsoft isn’t BlackBerry or Palm — it’s an enormously profitable company that can print money from its enterprise software and services. This is particularly important because it means Microsoft has the flexibility to keep pouring money into money-losing projects longer than most companies could ever dream of doing. Let’s be honest: If Microsoft has stuck with Bing this long, there’s no way it’s giving up on Windows Phone.
And is Windows Phone really doing that poorly? In the United States, Germany and China it certainly is, but in other key markets it’s captured a fairly respectable share. Kantar reports that in the U.K., Windows Phone’s share has climbed from 7.8% in May 2013 to 9.1% in May 2014. In France, its share has climbed from 8.7% last year to 10.5% this year, while in Argentina it’s climbed from 5.2% last year to 10.9% this year.
Don’t get me wrong, I’m not arguing that Windows Phone has been a success because it clearly hasn’t been so far. But given Microsoft’s deep pockets and its willingness to stick out projects that aren’t immediate money makers, I can’t see it calling it quits on the mobile platform market anytime soon, especially not when its new CEO has adopted a strategy of prioritizing both mobile and the cloud as his two chief initiatives.

Super-Thin iPhone 6 on Sept 19 Release Date Confirmed with LTPS Display & Curved Screen Panel – Reports

The iPhone 6 on release date this 2014 is likely the slimmest ever that Apple will build as fresh indications emerged that point to the display panel attributes of the device plus its overall make.

From China, the iPhone maker is reportedly switching to a single brightness enhancement film (BEF) that serves as the backlight tool for the next iPhone screen panel. Apple will use a higher quality module to offset the loss of the dual BEF that was in previous iPhone models,MacRumors said in a report.
MacRumors pointed to China Times as the source of its information.
But with the switch, it is suggested too that Apple may encounter yield issues as better quality BEF takes more time to manufacture. It is unclear also in the report if this problem will impact on the supposed iPhone 6 availability on September this year.
What is clear, the report said, is one BEF firing up the iPhone 6 screen panel will allow engineers to further shrink the device's thickness, which is in line with swirling speculations that the next iPhone's new form-factor is mostly about it super-slim build.
Curved screen panel
In another report, this time from 9to5Mac, alleged leaked images of the iPhone 6 screen panel seem to reveal two things about the device - that it will have a larger screen from that of the iPhone 5S and the front panel sides taper in at the edge.
The 9to5Mac photos insinuate of a next iPhone body finish that is more rounded when compared to the 2013 versions. Also, the pictures support the growing expectation that Apple will issue the 5S sequel in two screen sizes - a 4.7-inch model and a 5.5-inch variant that serves as the first iOS-powered phablet.
IGZO out, LTPS in
As for the display technology that Apple will deploy with the iPhone, the chance is higher that the tech giant will opt for LTPS instead of rumoured IGZO panel that Japan's Sharp Display will manufacture, Apple Insidersaid in a report.
While IGZO is said to deliver higher brightness on a device screen and is prized too for its power-efficient feature, LTPS panels are easier to bulk produce, added the same report.
Apparently in choosing LTPS over IGZO, which is also rumoured for the 2014 iPads, Apple is assured of timely shipment plus the volume it requires. LTPS is likewise known for the same amount of energy efficiency, or near the same level, that is attached with Sharp's IGZO screen technology, added the Apple Insider report.
The iPhone 6 release date is said to be on September 19 2014 though there are talks the 4.7-inch regular version will come out first with the 5.5-inch jumbo-size sibling to immediately follow.
