iPad 2 and iPhone 4 will not get iOS 8 update

iPhone 4 and iPad 2 are some of the Apple devices that may no longer receive the iOS 8 update when it rolls out early next month.
Apple is planning to announce the next generation of its mobile and desktop operating system – iOS 8 and Mac OS X 10.10, on its annual WorldWide Developers' Conference on June 2 to 6, 2014. During the release of new iOS, iPhone users were concerned whether their devices will receive the update or they will be forced to upgrade their unit.
Based on previous Apple releases, every time the company upgrades its mobile software, Apple no longer supports one or two previous models. This year, Apple still has not confirmed which of its devices will make the cut.
The rumored iPhone 6, iPad Air 2 and iPad Mini 3 will come pre-installed with iOS 8. According to MacWorld, iOS 8 will support iPhone 4S as well as the newer models of iPhones. As for the iPad line, the iPad 3 onwards will be supported by iOS 8 leaving iPad 2 behind. The fifth generation of Apple's iPod will definitely be supported by the next iOS 8.
Aside from iOS 8 and Mac OS X 10.10, BGR cited Financial Times claiming that Apple will introduce another "a new software platform" at the WWDC 2014 event that will allow Apple users to control the lights, appliances and security systems in their homes, making it a smart home. The report also added that the new platform from Apple will give it an advantage over Google and Samsung.
The new smart home software platform will pack common automation features that are found in similar platforms or software. However, it is unspecified if Apple's iBeacon technology will be used in this new platform. The Cupertino-based company is reportedly working with various manufacturers of appliances, which will offer devices and accessories for the company's new smart home platform.

iPhone 7 Release Date Rumors: Is A 2014 Release Date Possible? New iPhone Boasts Of Better Battery Life And A Built-In Projector

iPhone 5S

iPhone 7 release date rumors suggest a 2014 launch.
Rumor has it that there might be a possibility of Apple releasing two new iPhones this year.  This assumption has been made after Morgan Stanley analyst Katy Huberty implied that Apple now has devised a way for multiple product launches in a year.  Her statement was timely released after a meeting with Apple CEO Time Cook and CFO Peter Oppenheimer.
Her statement along with the fact that Apple has released two iPhones in 2013- the iPhone 5s and iPhone 5c- made the rumor even more convincing.  According to Huberty, this development which can be likened to the quick release of the iPad 3 and 4, might also up the ante in iPhone updates and releases.
Despite the promising statement, Huberty has not confirmed any specific plan for the iPhone line, including the highly-awaited iPhone 7 release date.
Despite unofficial iPhone 7 release date rumors, fanatics of the Apple smartphone are still looking forward to the new iPhone 7 which boasts of better battery life and possibly even a built-in projector.
According to the blog iPhone7update.com, the iPhone 7 battery will be using organic materials to replace traditional Li-On batteries.  This new battery technology promises to give extended hours of battery life.
It has also been said that Apple has been working on built-in projector technology for future iPhones and iPads.  The projector will enable users to automatically project presentations or movies without having to connect their phones to a separate equipment.  If this would prove to be successful, the iPhone 7 might be the first Apple product to debut the technology.
The release of Apple products has been one of the most highly anticipated events globally.  Even with Apple releasing new ground-breaking products annually, users and fans still look forward to what the innovation giant has to offer.

People with iPhones in the UK and Australia have reported their smartphones being hacked, and a ransom demanded in order to unlock them

People with iPhones in the UK and Australia have reported their smartphones being hacked, and a ransom demanded in order to unlock them.

Users have taken to the official support forums on the Apple website to complain about the issue, with iPhone owners reporting that a message appears onscreen saying they have been hacked, and must pay between AU$50 and $100 (£55) in order to get their device unlocked.
According to analysts, the hacker, who identifies themselves as 'Oleg Pliss', is using the Find My iPhone app to send the messages and lock devices.
Apple is yet to offer any official comment on the hack, but an Australian government website has told users to change the password of their Apple ID, used to log-in on Apple devices like the iPhone and iPad, in order secure their device.
The Find My iPhone app has a remote access feature that enables users to remotely lock and wipe their device should it be stolen or lost. Experts believe it is this feature that has been exploited in order to carry out the hack.

‘iPhones represent social status for teens’

iPhone

Research from Piper Jaffray suggests gadgets and food, rather than clothes, are the main areas where teens spend money, reports CNET.com.
Have you noticed that your local teens have been looking especially shabby of late? Are they sporting T-shirts that don’t even appear to have come from Abercrombie, American Eagle, or any brand that belches a logo as loudly as it can?
Apparently, the young rulers of tomorrow are eschewing mere clothing for some of the finer things in life. According to the International Business Times, teens are examining their wallets and deciding that, oh, clothes are so yesteryear. They don’t give them the status and power they used to.
Instead, teens are spending more money on food and gadgets.
The IBT cites research from Piper Jaffray, and quotes an associate professor in Business Enterprise at Fordham University, Marcia Flicker.
The suggestion is that those gaudy teen clothing brands that you see peppering malls are all suffering from a lack of financial seasoning from their former regulars.
Fashion, it seems, is how teens used to show off their social wherewithal. Now they spend a fulsome 21 per cent of their money dining out.
It’s unclear whether these teens are dining out at Burger King a lot, their local trattoria sometimes, or the French Laundry hardly ever. However, if they’re not showing off by eating out, they’re apparently doing it by buying gadgets. Flicker explained it in terms of the specific iPhones teens display: “Will they buy the iPhone 6 when it comes out, or be stuck with the slower iPhone 5? Or, even worse, still have an iPhone 4?”

Samsung Galaxy S4 Value Edition With Android 4.4 KitKat Silently Launched

samsung_galaxy_s4_value_edition.jpg

The Samsung Galaxy S4 has been made available in a new variant dubbed Galaxy S4 Value Edition. The smartphone is now available in Netherlands via various e-commerce websites at EUR 398, which translates to roughly Rs. 31,700. Samsung is yet to officially announce the device.
The Galaxy S4 Value Edition, first spotted by GSM Info, comes with identical specifications as its original sibling launched last year, with the only difference being that the former runs the latestAndroid 4.4 KitKat out-of-the-box.
Unfortunately, there is no word on when the Galaxy S4 Value Edition will be released in other European countries and other markets outside Europe. It's worth noting that the Galaxy S4 (Review |Pictures) started receiving Android 4.4.2 KitKat update earlier this year. The Android KitKat update added a lot of goodies from 2014 flagship smartphone, the Galaxy S5 (Review | Pictures) to the Galaxy S4.
Recently, the company rolled out another update for the Galaxy S4 which added two features - Kids Mode and Knox 2.0, which are both already available on the Galaxy S5.
Considering that the Galaxy S4 Value Edition comes with similar innards as the Galaxy S4, we wonder why the South Korean launched a new handset featuring the same specifications - unless it is trying to emphasis the value-for-money attractiveness of its year-old flagship.
The Galaxy S4 Value Edition comes with a 5-inch full-HD display with a resolution of 1080x1920 pixels, and pixel density of 441ppi. It is powered by 1.9GHz Qualcomm Snapdragon 600 and includes 2GB of RAM. Other specifications include 13-megapixel rear camera, 2-megapixel front-facing camera, 16GB inbuilt storage, expandable storage support via microSD card (up to 32GB), and 2600mAh battery.
In March, Samsung launched the Galaxy S III mini Value Edition, which was a compact variant of the 2012 flagship smartphone, the Galaxy S III.

Apple iPhone 6 is coming: What you should know

XXX 170298175

Going into an iPhone launch there's never much doubt about whether Apple's (NASDAQ: AAPL ) latest addition to the key lineup will sell better than its predecessor. Where the confusion usually lies is in how much better the newest model will do than the one before it. While the 5s and 5c have performed about in line with analyst expectations, the 4s outperformed even most of the bullish projections. What can Apple investors expect from the iPhone 6 this year?
Another blowout?
For the most part, there are big expectations for Apple's iPhone 6.
The hyperactive rumor mill, as noted by MacRumors, expects the key differentiator for the next-generation iPhone to be a larger display screen. Fortunately, there seems to be a considerable market for smartphones with displays larger than 4 inches.
While early rumors suggested Apple would launch both a 4.7-inch and 5.7-inch iPhone this fall, the consensus agreement now is that the 5.7-inch iPhone has been pushed back toward the end of the year. But a 4.7-inch display would add almost three quarters of an inch to the current diagonal measure of the iPhone 5s, enough to push Apple into that proven market for larger displays.
Just how good does the market for larger smartphones look? A third of all smartphones sold globally in the first quarter of 2014 had screen sizes larger than 5 inches, according to research firm Canalys. The market hit 90 million units in the quarter, making it the fastest-growing segment of smartphones when measured by display size. Comparatively, Apple sold 43.7 million iPhones during the quarter.
At this point, it's irrefutable: The market for larger smartphone displays looks lucrative. Apple seems to have plainly acknowledged this fact. Recent documents that surfaced in court filings in an Apple-Samsung case showed a slide in a slide show entitled, "Consumers want what we don't have." The slide detailed the growing adoption of smartphones with displays larger than 4 inches.
Recent supply-chain checks by longtime Apple analyst Katy Huberty at Morgan Stanley also supported speculation that the consumer demand for Apple's iPhone 6 will be robust. Based on her recent trip to the Far East, Huberty believes suppliers are prepping for iPhone 6 sales to be 20% higher than 5s sales.
A rosy outlook for iPhone 6 is great news for the company's investors. With the iPhone accounting for 57% of Apple's total revenue in its most recent quarter, a jump in sales for this device will be great for the business -- especially considering the iPhone is Apple's most profitable product segment.
So what should investors expect from the iPhone 6 launch? Big numbers. In the months following the fall launch, Apple certainly could see year-over-year growth in iPhone sales in excess of 15%.

Hackers bypass iCloud activation with doulCi tool; can unlock stolen or bricked iPhones, iPads

Hackers bypass iCloud activation with doulCi tool; can unlock stolen or bricked iPhones, iPads

Two hackers who call themselves AquaXetine and MerrukTechnologhave released a hack that can basically bypass Apple’s rock solid iCloud activation mechanism reports Dutch publication De Telegraaf.

This simple hack name ‘doulCi’ (get it?) by the duo allows bricked iPhones to be reactivated even if the owner has used the iCloud remote lock feature, which obviously opens up all sorts of problems when it comes to iPhones remotely wiped after they have been stolen. But even those users who have legitimate iPhones that have been bricked have hope thanks to the doulCi tool.

Those who wish to use doulCi have to modify the hosts file on their PC or Mac, and then connect to iTunes. The hosts file helps direct network traffic from a PC to specific servers. When the user then runs iTunes, it will detect the device plugged in and automatically transmit an activation request, which is then rerouted to doulCi. The device is then purportedly activated without any further action on the user’s part. The hacker team claims that work is in progress to ensure that all iPhone, iPad and iPod models are supported. The exact line that needs to be added to the hosts file has not yet been published.

The hack relies on a man-in-the-middle spoofing technique to make Apple devices actually believe that they have connected to a legitimate iCloud server. The hacker duo claims they can activate thousands of devices every minute, and there is a lot of evidence on their Twitter pages regarding re-activated devices, with pictures from people from around the world of devices and screenshots showing the hack actually working.

The official doulCi website has details of how the hack works and disclaimers that suggest it should only be used by the rightful owners of the device who have lost or hacked or have forgotten their login info. Their website says doulCi to be the world’s first alternative iCloud Server, and the world’s first iCloud Activation Bypass. According to the hackers, around 30,000 stolen iPhones have been unlocked using doulCi. These have been bought over the Internet from Chinese traders on eBay and other major auction sites for between $50 and $150.

What’s surprising about this hack is that AquaXetine and MerrukTechnolog reportedly contacted Apple about this vulnerability back in March, but Apple never responded, which prompted them to go public with the disclosure. The hackers say they finally decided to approach the Dutch media because Apple has not yet admitted publicly that its system has been compromised.

Of course the more alarming development thanks to this hack is that iCloud, which is used to store a lot of sensitive user data, can in fact be breached. It remains to be seen whether these may be in danger, though the doulCi hackers suggest it may be vulnerable. Their advice is not to use iCloud till Apple has solved the problem.

SnapLite docks with iPhones, reveals its alter ego

A desk lamp it may merely seem to be, but it can dock with your iPhone to uncover its secret identity as a scanner.
snaplite00 SnapLite docks with iPhones, reveals its alter ego
Desk lamps aren’t particularly popular as a subject in consumer tech, and it’s obvious to see why. This time however, its sheer simplicity may exactly be a point of interest, as we look into SnapLite, a rather unassuming desk lamp made by PFU that actually hides a nifty extra feature for iPhone 5 users.
snaplite01 SnapLite docks with iPhones, reveals its alter ego
This image should already give you an idea just how simple SnapLite could get. But not readily seen in this neat-looking simple setup, is an iPhone dock that is located above the unit. This desk lamp actually doubles as an overhead scanner, allowing users to scan images, documents, and even regular objects. And no, this isn’t just a stand for you to use the iPhone’s camera by the way, because as a real scanner, it has all the sensors and components that it needs (though it still uses the camera for the base image). All you have to provide is a simple Bluetooth connection with the docked iPhone 5 unit.
snaplite02 SnapLite docks with iPhones, reveals its alter ego
The iPhone’s accelerometer automatically adjusts the scanner’s surface orientation, while lasers project the borders of the scanning area. Scanning requires a simple press of the button at the bottom of the desk lamp. The scanned image is automatically saved on the docked iPhone, in JPEG format, and can be edited using a custom app. Maximum scanning size is A4, though the scanner can be set to start scanning after a set period of time.
One last bonus of the SnapLite is the option of the custom app to control the desk lamp itself (turn off/on, change brightness, etc.) using the properly paired iPhone unit. Oh, and the dock also serves as a charger for your iPhone.
snaplite03 SnapLite docks with iPhones, reveals its alter ego

The SnapLite can be used for the iPhone 5, 5S and 5C, and is compatible with iOS 6.0+. It has a price in Japan that is equivalent to $125.00.

Budget smartphones segment to see further growth: Analysts

Budget smartphones segment to see further growth: Analysts

NEW DELHI: Bullish on the sub-Rs 12,000 smartphone category, international brands as well as homegrown players are geared up to flood the domestic market with more affordable devices as they try to cash in on the Rs 2,800 crore opportunity in India.

In the past week alone, brands like Motorola, Nokia and Intex launched their devices - Moto E, Lumia 630 and Aqua i5HD - all priced below Rs 12,000. Interestingly, the Moto E and Lumia 630 feature the latest operating systems - Android KitKat and Windows Phone 8.1 - a move analysts feel is an attempt by handset makers to offer enhanced experience to woo price-conscious Indians.

"Next wave of consumer demand will come from mid-level smartphones priced below Rs 12,000. This category is expected to clock 60 million units and Rs 280 billion by value by end of FY 2014-15, with a healthy growth of about 15% over FY 2014 both in terms of both value and volume," Lava International CMD Hari Om Rai told .

Research firm IDC Senior Market Analyst (Mobile Phones and Tablets) Manasi Yadav said the category is "pretty dominant". "The category is only expected to grow further in the coming quarters as more international and local vendors launch cheaper smartphones. According to our 2013 Q4 data, this category (sub-$200) contributed to almost 75% in terms of shipment volumes," she added.

Gartner, another research firm, said smartphones currently account for less than 20% of the sales. "Smartphone is high growth potential segment in Indian mobile phone market as less than 20% sales came from smartphone in 2013 compared to over 80% in markets like China. Global players like Samsung, LG, Motorola, Nokia along with local players like Micromax, Karbon, Spice, Lava are doing well in smartphone segment," Gartner Principal Research Analyst Anshul Gupta said.

Korean electronics giant Samsung, which has close to 40% share of the Indian smartphone market, believes that India is at the cusp of digital revolution as consumers switch from feature phones to smartphones at a scorching pace. "The next 100 million connected users will demand mobile content and services in local languages provided through an enhanced user experience across a range of smart devices at an affordable total cost of ownership," Samsung India Country Head (Mobile and IT) Vineet Taneja said.

According to IDC, smartphone sales in the country grew almost three-fold to over 44 million in 2013, buoyed by a strong uptake of affordable devices made by local firms such as Micromax and Karbonn. While Samsung led the category, Micromax had 16%, Karbonn (10%), Sony (5%) and Lava (4.7%) in the fourth quarter of 2013.

First Android Silver Device by LG to Pack Qualcomm MSM8994; Nexus 6 Successor to be Sprint

Android Silver Project

Handsets made by LG will reportedly be the first among Android Silver devices that will replace Google's four-year-old Nexus smartphones.
A series of leaks reveal details about Google's long-rumoured Android Silver project.
Well known Twitter leakstar, evleaks, recently confirmed there would be no Nexus 6 and that there would be no further Google Nexus smartphones. He then confirmed that Android Silver devices were expected soon with availability sometime around next February.
In a new disclosure, evleaks claims that LG handsets will be one among the first Android Silver lineups. The devices will be powered by Qualcomm MSM8994, which is said to be Snapdragon 810.
This makes sense, considering previous rumours according to which LG and Motorola were expected to be the top contenders for manufacturing the Android Silver smartphones, wherein Google would limit the number of third party apps that could be pre-installed or mandate users to be able to uninstall the apps.
Other manufacturers such as Samsung, HTC and Sony are still in contention as hardware partners.
Google is said to have spent $1bn for the manufacture of Android Silver which will target the United States and other developed markets.

Windows Phone 8.1 Upgraded features

Windows Phone 8.1 Upgraded features

Even if the Windows Phones have climbed a few steps up the ranks, unfortunately for Microsoft, the devices didn’t experience an explosive popularity the minute they appeared on the shelves, like other smartphones have. Their latest smartphone, the Windows Phone 8.1 really needed some upgrades in order to compete with the other smartphones on the market, even if Microsoft wanted its device to outshine all rivals.

The first smartphone carrying Windows Phone 8.1 starts shipping this week in Asia, even as Microsoft continues tweaking that latest version of its mobile OS.
The device is the Nokia Lumia 630, which also comes in a dual-SIM (subscriber identity module) version and which will be sold later in Europe and the U.S. It features a ClearBlack 4.5-inch LCD screen with Corning Gorilla Glass 3 and a quad-core Snapdragon processor.
It also comes with SensorCore, a feature that lets the devices monitor users’ movements without draining the battery and which can be used in conjunction with fitness-tracking apps, according to Microsoft.
However, what sets it apart at the moment is the distinction of being the first commercially available smartphone running on Windows Phone 8.1, according to Microsoft.
The new version of the OS comes with the voice-operated assistant Cortana, Microsoft’s answer to Apple’s Siri and Google’s Now, as well as with a new “Action Center” for easier management of device functions and notifications, and improvements to its calendar, music, video, podcast and other features.
The standard Lumia 630 model is expected to cost around €119, or about $163, before taxes and subsidies, while the dual-SIM model will go for around €129, or about $176, according to a Nokia blog post.
Since April, anyone has been able to install a developers’ preview version of 8.1 on Windows Phone devices, and Microsoft this week also rolled out an update of the OS with new features and bug fixes, Microsoft official Brandon LeBlanc said in a blog post.
“We’ve received a ton of great feedback so far on what people like about Windows Phone 8.1, and some things we can improve,” he wrote.
The "baked" version of Windows Phone 8.1 shipping with the Lumia 630 is considered finished because it includes the OS along with additional software from Nokia and from the mobile operators that will carry it, a source close to the company said.
Meanwhile, the Windows Phone 8.1 developer preview isn't considered finalized because it hasn't gone through carrier testing and does not include software enhancements from Nokia, this person said..
Microsoft didn’t immediately respond to a request for comment.

The Xiaomi Mi Pad is a plastic iPad mini for Android lovers

The cheapest iPad mini with Retina display costs $399, but today it's being undercut by a competitor that goes to great lengths to emulate everything about Apple's popular tablet. Xiaomi's Mi Pad has the same 7.9-inch screen size and even the same 2048 x 1536 resolution, while its color scheme, shape, and design are all evocative of Apple's iPhone 5C lineup. In fact, Xiaomi openly acknowledges that it's using the same materials as on the "unapologetically plastic" 5C. Its customized MIUI interface running atop Android seems to take similar inspiration from the look of iOS 7.
The one area where the Mi Pad distinguishes itself is in being the first Tegra K1 device to be announced from any manufacturer. Nvidia's latest chip showed great promise back at CES in January, but has taken a long time to make it to market in real devices. Now it'll be available in the Mi Pad, which can be had in June for 1,499 yuan (just over $240) with 16GB or 1,699 yuan ($275) with 64GB of storage. As with Huawei, Xiaomi's prices are likely to be higher should the Mi Pad ever make it out of China. The company describes the initial release as a beta, perhaps in an effort to tamper expectations and to gauge the interest in a high-spec, low-price alternative to Apple's best tablet.Having poached one of Android's top executives, Hugo Barra, away from Googlelast summer, Xiaomi has been on a quest to assert itself as something more than just another Chinese copycat device maker. Alas, the debut of its latest product would suggest that old habits die hard.
