Even before Google releases its latest operating system the Android 5.0 Lollipop sometime in November, fans can download some new features of the apps right now - thanks to the leaked system file dump, which was available via the Android 5.0 Lollipop Developer Preview.
Phandroid shared the leaked files including a number of Google apps like the Messenger app (that was once called Google Messaging), Google Play Music, Google Calendar, Google Fit, Google Keep, Google Books, Google Drive, in addition to Gmail.
Meanwhile, iDigital Times reported that it was possible for users to sideload the leaked apps to any Android device. All they need to do is root and place the apps in the /system/lib folder after they have uninstalled the original apps.
Nevertheless, Phandroid has clarified not all apps will work with the sideloading procedure.
However, two of the leaked apps did work well after they were sideloaded successfully in a Nexus 5 device, which runs on the Android 5.0 Lollipop Developer Preview. These two leaked apps include the Google Play Music and Google Messenger apps.
The Google Messenger app, compared to its predecessor in the previous Android versions, offers a simpler and minimalistic interface in the latest Android 5.0 Lollipop update. In addition, this app comes with a new Material Design look and includes more efficient functions.
Phandroid also pointed out that the new Messenger makes adding attachments in a ongoing conversation simpler and direct. It allows the user to just take a photo using the built-in viewfinder, record a voice message, or choose photos from the gallery and subsequently attach it in the running conversation. In fact, different conversations running simultaneously can be assigned different colors.
There are other reports that say that the Messenger app will also function effectively on the Android 4.4 KitKat version.
On the other hand, the leaks for Google Play Music as well as Google Fit showed that they have a simpler and more contemporary look in the Android 5.0 Lollipop update.
However, users who plan to download these apps will be doing so at their own risk and should make a back-up of their original apps before installing the new updates.

WhatsApp to launch free calls for iOS, Android and Windows Phone 8.1?

WhatsApp to launch free calls for iOS, Android and Windows Phone 8.1

Over the past five years, WhatsApp has seen a massive rise in popularity, as the application received large scale success in a very short time, and today is literally a part of almost every handset ever.
WhatsApp has over six hundred million monthly active users, as per the August updates.
The phone has eradicated most of the IM services and now targets at the SMS and email, and has almost succeeded at demolishing their existence as well.
What lies in future for whatsapp is to look at the target segment of people who use apps for calling, or are looking for free calls. Along with that they are releasing various new features too.
New features that have recently come out include the fact that you can now mute a group conversation for a year, and you can also deactivate notifications coming from the group messages, so basically even silent notifications can be eliminated now.
Improved location sharing and chat archiving have also been introduced for the iOS. Whatsapp has now been working on the feature that most users are demanding since some time now.
The feature is the much wanted “Voice Calling”. It would be just an extension of the voice notes for them but could come as a boon to many people.
Another recent update is that they brought in the option to hide your last seen, where users will only see you when you are online or typing to them.
You can also save other users profile photos or group icons. Also, in a new feature you can now pay for other users whatsapp subscription.

Apple's iPhone 6 and iPhone 6 Plus reach record 4 million preorders in first day

Apple's 2014 smartphone lineup is already off to a record start, with 4 million preorders taken for both the iPhone 6 and iPhone 6 Plus in their first 24 hours of availability, leading up to this Friday's launch.

The company said on Monday that demand for its newest iPhones has already exceeded the initial preorder supply, and many orders placed are scheduled to ship in October. The comments may suggest that Apple's initial launch weekend sales figures will be held back by supply rather than demand.

"iPhone 6 and iPhone 6 Plus are better in every way, and we are thrilled customers love them as much as we do," said Tim Cook, Apple's CEO.""Pre-orders for iPhone 6 and iPhone 6 Plus set a new record for Apple, and we can't wait to get our best iPhones yet into the hands of customers starting this Friday."

Last year, Apple sold 9 million iPhone 5s and iPhone 5c units in their launch weekend. That easily exceeded the record 5 million iPhone 5 units the company sold on that device's launch weekend in 2012.

When the iPhone 6 and iPhone 6 Plus become available this Friday, additional units will be available at Apple Stores and other retail partners for walk-in customers. The handset arrives first in the U.S., Australia, Canada, France, Germany, Hong Kong, Japan, Puerto Rico, Singapore and the U.K.

iPhone 6, 6+

Apple also announced on Monday that 20 additional countries will get the iPhone 6 starting the following Friday, Sept. 26. They include Austria, Belgium, Denmark, Finland, Ireland, Isle of Man, Italy, Liechtenstein, Luxembourg, Netherlands, New Zealand, Norway, Portugal, Qatar, Russia, Saudi Arabia, Spain, Sweden, Switzerland, Taiwan, Turkey and United Arab Emirates.

The company had already revealed last week that overnight preorders of the iPhone 6 and iPhone 6 Plus were at record levels. Last Friday, Apple characterized demand for its new, bigger phones as "incredible."

Demand was so strong that Apple and its carrier partners' websites experienced a number of problems accepting customer orders. Such issues have occurred every year since the first iPhone launched in 2007, with demand for Apple's latest models only growing each year.

As of Monday morning, the 4.7-inch iPhone 6 is advertised to ship within 7 to 10 business days, while the 5.5-inch iPhone 6 Plus will ship in 3 to 4 weeks.

Blu Studio ushers in colorful line of cheap Android smartphones

Blu Studio C Series

Cheap Android smartphones are ready for purchase from Blu Studio, which is launching new affordable and unlocked smartphones for the North American market.
While the company has promised to launch Windows Phones in the near future, right now it is focusing on its Android models, which come in a number of colors and functionality for users.
The Blu Studio C Series is able to connect onto any GSM Network in the United States, which means users will be able to take the phone to any cell phone carrier and have it activated and working instantly.
"Blu is dedicated to continue bringing consumers choice in the way of unlocked smartphones, driven by the demand for affordable quality devices and the freedom of selecting their airtime provider, thus by eliminating the dependency of locked devices which the network carrier has to offer," said Samuel Ohev-Zion, CEO of BLU Products, in a media release.
"We will continue to fundamentally change the mobile industry by making great looking smartphones that can do amazing things, priced for everyone," he adds.
Blu says the goal is to show the general population that there is no need to spend hundreds of dollars for a phone.
The Studio C Series phones have large displays, a solid camera and speedy processing, giving it a leg up on other lower-end smartphones currently available. Add to that six different color options and Blu believes it has a winning product lineup.
The 4.7-inch display features HD viewing with 294 ppi pixel density, and with an 8.0-megapixel camera, including an LED Flash and full HD recording options, it allows users to take crisp photos or video while on the go.
At only $149 via Amazon.com, the phones are likely to be popular for those seeking to grab a smartphone but who don't want the more expensive Samsung or Apple options.
The smartphone sector has seen a rise in competition this summer, as Amazon launched its first smartphone model, Fire, with much praise for its ease of use and functionality. Tech Times has also reported on the LG G3 smartphone with high-end video and photo capabilities that is currently doing very well on the market ahead of the fall's Apple iPhone 6 launch.

U.S. Supreme Court rules police need a warrant to search cell phones

The U.S. Supreme Court has ruled unanimously that police must have a warrant to search the content inside a cell phone of a person who has been arrested.
The decision is the result of two cases that were brought to the Supreme Court, Riley v. California and U.S. v. Wurie, both of which involved police who searched the content of cell phones of people who had been arrested but without asking for a warrant beforehand.
However, in a decision written by Chief Justice John Roberts, the nine members of the Supreme Court all agreed that "police generally may not, without a warrant, search digital information on a cell phone seized from an individual who has been arrested."
The court did state there will be a few exceptions to this rule, such as cases that involve kidnappings and bomb threats that generate what the judges consider to be "exigent circumstances". However, today's decision finally does offer solid guidance on what the police can and cannot do when they arrest people with cell phones.
What do you think about this new court ruling and do you support the fact that police will now need to get a warrant before they can search inside the contents of a cell phone?

How to Check If Your Android Device Could Be Hacked via Heartbleed
Heartbleed is causing heartache on hundreds of servers all over the internet, but security researchers have also warned that the bug could allow direct hacks of Android, too. Here's how to check if your device is at risk.
While researchers at security firm Symantec happily report that the major browsers don't rely on the OpenSSL cryptographic library to implement HTTPS—so are unaffected by Heartbleed—the same isn't true of the Android OS. Ars Technica explains how your Google-powered device could be compromised:
[T]he most likely scenario for an attacker exploiting a vulnerable Android device is to lure the user to a booby-trapped website that contains a cross-site request forgery or similar exploit that loads banking sites or other sensitive online services in a separate tab. By injecting malicious traffic into one tab, the attacker could possibly extract sensitive memory contents corresponding to the sites loaded in other tabs, he said. A less sophisticated version of the attack—but also one that's easier to execute—might simply inject the malicious commands into a vulnerable Android browser and opportunistically fish for any sensitive memory contents that may be returned.
With so many tweaked and forked version of Android out there, though, it's tough to provide a conclusive list of exactly which devices are affected. But good news: Heartbleed Detector, a free app developed by Lookout Mobile, will tell you if your device is at risk.
So, go download the app and run it. It will tell you if your device contains the vulnerable version of OpenSSL that Heartbleed affects. It will also tell you if the Heartbeat extension that hosts the coding bug is enabled. If you don't have the vulnerable version, or you do but but the extension isn't enabled, you should be just fine. Otherwise, you better hold tight and act carefully until your OS is patched.
