Apple is working on an iPhone 6 that could arrive this summer or in the fall. While The company won’t confirm a new iPhone for 2014 but there is no doubt that Apple is working on a follow-up to the iPhone 5s. The iPhone 6 rumors trickle in daily as leaks point to small parts of a bigger iPhone 6 picture, company patents and statements suggest possible directions and analysts share details on iPhone 6 rumors that start as a whisper in the supply chain in Asia, offering a glimpse of what is to come.
It’s still much to early to know exactly what Apple is planning for an iPhone 6, but we are to the point where features and specifications start to emerge from very small pieces of information that insiders are able to weave together for a clearer picture. The iPhone 6 rumors don’t all agree, which is expected as Apple tests ideas and components with partners and may not even bring some of these parts or ideas to market.
The first iPhone 6 rumors started in late 2012 with chatter about a larger screen, which remains the biggest constant in all iPhone 6 rumors. At this point there are no analysts or leaks pointing to an iPhone 6 with a 4-inch screen, which is as close as we will get to a confirmed feature for this new iPhone.
With an iPhone 5s on store shelves Apple’s launch patterns suggest the iPhone 6 will bring a bigger upgrade that offers a new design and more changes to the feature-set than the iPhone 5s did. Apple traditionally uses the iPhone design for two years, and during the last update to the iPhone design the company slimmed down the phone, increased the screen size and made several other changes to the design.
As Apple prepares an iPhone 6 or multiple iPhone 6 models to compete with a soon to be announced Samsung Galaxy S5 and other devices, this article shares everything we think we know about the upcoming Apple iPhone 6.
IPHONE 6? IPHONE AIR? WHAT’S IN A NAME?
Will the new iPhone arrive with the iPhone 6 name? It’s not clear what name Apple plans to use and how it might separate the two rumored iPhone 6 sizes especially if the iPhone 5c branding dies off like The Wall Street Journal claims.
Analysts and consumers are already calling the new iPhone for 2014 the iPhone 6, so that is the name that will stick for at least the next several months until a credible rumor points to a new name or until Apple announces the new iPhone on stage.
Some rumors suggest Apple will call the device the iPhone Air, adopting the Air naming of the iPad Air and MacBook Air lines. So far Apple keeps the iPhone naming scheme predictable, but nothing is set in stone.
IPHONE 6 RELEASE DATE
Apple traditionally releases a new iPhone in the fall, but this year sources point to two areas for a possible iPhone 6 event and release — summer and fall.
If Apple chooses to deliver a summer iPhone 6 release it would cut down the time Samsung and HTC have on market with a newer phone competing against the iPhone 5s. This would put the iPhone 6 out around Apple’s WWDC event which traditionally focuses on software and would make for a short lead time for the rumored iOS 8 update we expect to see at the event.
A fall iPhone 6 release date is more likely based on Apple’s patterns and analyst notes. If this is the case, September is a likely candidate so that Apple can offer a new iPhone 6 right as many iPhone 5 owner contracts come to an end. In a note published on AppleInsider Timothy Arcuri of Cowen and Company suggests the iPhone 6 release is most likely set for September, but a summer release is , “not out of the question.”
Eldar Murtazin, an industry insider who previously shared details about the Galaxy line of smartphones suggests an iPhone 6 release in summer is possible.
